What is Vinyasa Yoga

What is Vinyasa Yoga

Whether new to Yoga Tribe Brooklyn (YTB) or not, you probably have heard or seen the word  “Vinyasa.” For the next few weeks, our blogs will be focusing on Vinyasa. What better way than jump-starting this Vinyasa series by explaining what it is?

Knowing the breakdown of the word and the meaning of flow can form a deeper connection to its entirety. I’ve practiced yoga for over three years, yet I never looked up definitions of Sanskrit words in any of my classes. So, with every chance you get, deepen your practice. Yoga is all about connecting the mind, body, and spirit. Knowing the meaning of Vinyasa yoga is one of the ways of doing so.

The Breakdown of the Word

Like many words used in yoga, Vinyasa is Sanskrit. The first part of the word “vi” means to place. The second part of the word “nyasa” means in a special way. The term altogether means to place in a certain way.

Whether you are a beginner, intermediate, or advanced, if you want to deepen your practice,  knowing the breakdown of Sanskrit words is one way of doing so. You will move with intention knowing what Vinyasa means.

Flowing Through Vinyasa

Vinyasa is transitioning from movement to movement with breath, knowing that you are in this space. With breath, you are moving from one posture to the next. Moving with intention is one way to flow. However, breathing through each posture is another way.

Vinyasa Classes at YTB

On the YTB website, you’ve probably noticed a Vinyasa Class. Yes, Vinyasa can be a part of a  flow; however, it can also be its own class. You can expect to link breath to body movement throughout this class. It is typically a semi-paste class and, like any other class, very refreshing.

Another thing to note is that there isn’t a set sequence with Vinyasa classes. Your instructor can sequence whatever they wish. This class is quite dynamic; of course, there are different levels.  No matter the level you practice, don’t worry. There will be variations for you to choose from.

There are many ways to define what Vinyasa is. After reading this, find what it means to you as we further expand on “Vinyasa” within these next few weeks. As usual, we can’t wait to see you here.
