How Yoga Really Works

How Yoga Really Works

Whether you have been doing yoga for a while or not, what do you know about yoga? Like really, really, really know about yoga? Yes, we all know it is a beautiful mind and body experience. We get more flexible, we have mental clarity, we feel a part of something bigger than ourselves, and we have so many health benefits that come with it as well. But how does yoga really work?

For one, there are many, many, many styles of yoga—all of which involve some stretching and even meditation to some degree. Yoga is an exercise that results in stress relief. This is why no matter the class you are taking at YTB, you feel bliss and ease once you roll up your matt and continue with your day. BUT HOW?

Yoga is More Than a Series of Postures

“Yoga is the artwork of awareness on the canvas of body, mind, and soul,” Amit Ray. Doing a  little yoga every day can rewire your brain. It can rewire your thought process. Anxious thoughts can subside and life’s heavy moments feel a little lighter.

Practicing yoga gives us the strength to let go. We tend to unlearn habits that no longer serve us.  So many of us struggle with mindfulness, yet we learn to listen and observe our thoughts and cultivate new awareness over time.

You are More Than a Body

Sometimes, we may feel less than, tiny even. Most of us identify by our name, career, religion,  what we eat, and ethnicities. However, you are an entire being, as so I! Everything within you and outside of you is interconnected.

Yoga can be translated as a sense of union between your mind, body, and spirit. The idea of these three powerful things is that they can’t be viewed as separate. Yoga is about uniting yourself and your environment. You are so much more than a brain, muscles, and bones. You are a life force, and yoga recognizes this. Yoga practices remind us to remember this wholeness.  This is how yoga really works.

I Challenge You To…

Challenge yourself to experience your human body, like really, really, really experience your human body. What does connecting your mind, body, and spirit look like?

No matter where you are in your practice, learn the basics. Study your body’s response to the postures you are in. How is your breathing? Where is your mind at? Are you all over the place,  mentally? Do you have a hard time staying present with your body?

Yoga isn’t something that you learn overnight. It’s no major destination that you reach a certain age. No. It’s more of an endless journey where you are constantly evolving. It’s a steady effort to unfold your true self.
